Project Overview
Location: Whitefish, Montana
Project Type: Multi-Zone Ductless Mini-Split Installation, Electrical Upgrades
Equipment Installed: Midea Ductless Mini-Split
Efficiency Rating: Cooling: SEER Rating 23.0 | Heating: HSPF2-4: 10.7
Why It Mattered: Lower energy costs, consistent warmth in multiple zones, and reliable performance through Montana’s long heating season
The Challenge
The homeowners were dealing with an aging mini split system that had reached the end of its life. The outdoor unit had a failed compressor and a leak in the outdoor coil, repairs that would have cost nearly as much as replacement, with no guarantee of long-term reliability.
Beyond the equipment failure, the original system design left something to be desired. The main living area had a single wall-mounted head, while the bedrooms were served by a ducted mini split configuration. This setup provided limited individual climate control for family members in different rooms, a common frustration when one person sleeps warm and another prefers it cooler.

The Solution
Our team designed a complete system replacement that addressed both the failed equipment and the comfort limitations of the original layout.
We removed the failed outdoor unit and converted the ducted bedroom system to individual wall-mounted heads, giving each bedroom independent temperature control. To maintain the clean aesthetics the homeowners wanted, we routed the refrigerant lines through the attic and inside the stud bays of the walls, keeping everything hidden from view.
Because the new multi-zone system has higher electrical demand than the original, our electricians upgraded the breaker to handle the increased load. They also installed surge protection on the outdoor unit’s disconnect. This is an important safeguard for inverter-driven systems like mini splits, where a power surge can damage sensitive control boards and lead to costly repairs.
The Results
The homeowners now have true zone-by-zone comfort control throughout the home. Each bedroom operates independently, so everyone can set their preferred temperature without affecting the rest of the house. The clean installation keeps all refrigerant lines concealed, and the electrical upgrades ensure the system is protected for years of reliable operation.
