Do I Need A De-Humidifier?

De-humidifiers can be useful appliances in the home to help maintain a preferred, healthy humidity level. They cleanse the air of excess moisture, which can help prevent mold and bacteria from growing. This may increase the quality of the air in the home and help prevent health issues. However, should every home have a de-humidifier? There are certain scenarios when a de-humidifier may help improve the air quality in a building, but not every home needs one.

Benefits of a de-humidifier

De-humidifiers come with several benefits for your home, air quality, and health. Not only can they help eliminate potentially dangerous bacteria in the air, but can improve indoor air quality. Benefits of keeping the air in your home at a reasonable humidity level include:

  • Mold Prevention
Mold and bacteria grow in places when moisture is plentiful. This fungus can be dangerous in large quantities, both to the structure of the home and the health of the people living in it.
  • Eliminate dust mites and improve air quality
In addition to removing moisture from the air, de-humidifiers can help purify the air that cycles through.
  • Prevent some water damage to the structure of the home
High moisture levels could mean that water and moisture are affecting the wood in the home, including support beams. Over time, high moisture in these wood beams could cause them to warp, crack or split. Additionally, low moisture levels prevent mold growth, rust on metal fittings, and more.
  • Comfort
No one likes to feel hot, sticky, or stuffy. De-humidifiers can help regulate temperatures and keep the room comfortable without having to crank up the AC.

Do I need a de-humidifier?

You may need a de-humidifier if:

  • You notice moisture or wet stains on ceilings, walls, or flood
  • The room feels unpleasantly stuffy, hot, or sticky
  • You notice condensation or water droplets gathering on the inside of the windows
  • The room has a musty odor
  • Mold or other growths are physically visible on walls, window ledges, or other places in the room, including behind picture frames or furniture.
  • There is excess moisture in the room.

Should every home have a de-humidifier?

Not every home needs a de-humidifier. If you do not notice any of the above in your home, you may not need one. HVAC systems and AC units also act as de-humidifiers as they cycle the air through filtration systems. However, having a de-humidifier can help take the burden off your AC system, lower some electrical costs and keep your home in great shape.
